Appendicitis Is Painful — Add A $41,212 Surgery Bill To The Misery

This latest article in Kaiser Health News’ “Bill of the Month” series ends on an uncharacteristically sour note with no “happily-ever-after” ending for the patient. The story highlights the fact that even though a few states have attempted to regulate “balance billing” by hospitals and doctors, state regulations don’t apply to employee benefit plans regulated by the federal government. Yet like the unfortunate patient in this article,  61% of Americans are covered by such plans. Clearly a national solution such as Medicare for All is required if consumers are to gain equal protection against abusive billing practices under the law.  — The HEAL Team
