California OneCare Supports the
WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strikes

A message from HEAL California’s organizational partner:

California OneCare, an activist organization working to achieve Medicare for All in California and the nation, is in full support of the current strike by SAG-AFTRA and the WGA.

Many people do not realize that these Guild members only get health care coverage if they earn a minimum amount for their work each month. No work, no coverage.

The fact that they have to strike to get a pay increase, protect their royalty payments, and fight the reality that artificial intelligence is threatening their income and careers, underscores how important regular income is, not only for the livelihood of the union members, but for continued health care coverage for themselves and their families.

“It’s a shame that it has come to this, especially when the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) members are experiencing significant profits,” says Don Schroeder, Chair of California OneCare. According to a recent report by Variety, the AMPTP members made a combined profit of $12.8 billion in 2022.

“According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 27.5 million Americans are suffering from a lack of any healthcare coverage,” says Schroeder. “And tens of millions more have inadequate coverage that leaves them vulnerable to crushing medical bills. These strikes are a potent reminder of the importance not only of a reasonable living wage, but also the critical need for affordable, quality healthcare for all.”
