Journalist/Communications/Media Relations Specialist
California OneCare Education Fund/HEAL California is a Medicare-for-All advocacy organization. We seek a part-time, freelance, remote journalist/ communications specialist to develop and execute all aspects of a media relations strategy.

JOB DUTIES
– Work with communications team to plan, initiate, execute and manage media relations activities with the goals of (1) amplifying the voices of organizations and individuals who work in the Medicare for All movement; (2) turning around negative media coverage about Medicare for All; and (3) enhancing HEAL California’s mission.
– Handle media inquiries and promote spokespeople across various media outlets including traditional television, radio and print, utilizing news releases, press advisories, email pitches, direct mail, advertising and online via websites, blogs, wikis and other social portals.
– Lead media outreach for publicity of commentary, op-eds and/or academic health policy studies authored by HEAL California spokespeople and/or advocates from a variety of organizations who support the Medicare for All movement.
– Brief HEAL California spokespeople prior to media appearances.
– Write, edit and collaborate on opinion pieces, articles, letters to the editor, brochures, pamphlets and petitions.
– Compose and edit internal communications, including monthly email blasts to supporters using a CRM (SalsaLabs).
– Develop and maintain a master media list; create specialized lists as necessary.
– Create, curate, and coordinate content across social media accounts, including social media advertising.
– Layout and design infographics, newsletters, handouts, and promotional materials
– Other tasks as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
– Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communications, advocacy, digital marketing, political campaigns, or a related field
– Ability to write clearly and concisely about complex subjects, with strong attention to detail and editing skills.
– Outstanding interpersonal skills
– Experience with WordPress content management systems or equivalent
– Proficiency in graphics programs such as Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
– Commitment to social justice and universal, single-payer healthcare.
– Ability to work remotely. Southern California residency a plus!
