Medi-Cal’s Very Big Decade

The number of Californians who depend on Medi-Cal for their health care has ballooned to 12.8 million people as of August 2019. Over one-third of California residents are in the program. With its Medi-Cal expansion, California has taken a strikingly different and laudable approach than the federal government when it comes to meeting its resident’s health care needs. Yet the state is missing major opportunities to improve care for everyone – including Medi-Cal enrollees – by failing to implement a state-based system. If California had pursued SB562, the Healthy California Act, California taxpayers would have saved over $30 billion a year according to an authoritative study by Robert Pollin. As of 2016/17, instead of spending $368.5 billion per year on health care, California could have spent only $331 billion.  — The HEAL Team
