Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal Announces Medicare for All PAC to Fund Candidates, Initiatives

A few months after House Democrats announced a Medicare for All Caucus, the co-chair, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), has introduced a Medicare for All PAC to support candidates who support the system championed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) during his 2016 run for president, as well as ballot initiatives in support of single-payer healthcare.

The House caucus is supporting H.R. 676, the Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act. The bill essentially eliminates all private, employer-based health plans and creates a new government plan with no premiums or deductibles. The only spot for private insurers is to provide “supplemental insurance.” Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt) has a Medicare for All bill that has the sponsorship of at least a third of Senate Democrats.

In California, a group of California physicians and healthcare advocates have launched the Single Payer Political Action Committee, which is dedicated to electing strong pro-single payer candidates to the California Legislature and statewide offices. The PAC was created to elect super majorities of pro-single payer candidates to the California Assembly and Senate. Their strategy is to build a “Healthy Majority” in the state Legislature.
