At A Time Of Great Need, Public Health Lacks ‘Lobbying Muscle’

 

 

How has chronic underfunding of public health impacted our ability to respond to crises like COVID-19?  Experts say we desperately need to build up our public heath infrastructure, but the politicians insist the funding is simply not there. This article points out that public health advocates, unlike hospitals, providers and unions, lack lobbyists. Is the lack of lobbyists really the problem? Or are the lobbyists hired by “the winners” in our expensive, fragmented healthcare market actually the problem? Here’s a critical question: What policy solutions are suggested when the problem is defined as a “lack of lobbying muscle?”  —The HEAL Team
